  • Sprint trivia for Avante

A couple of questions for Avante (and anyone else who wants to have a go) -

In 1995 the top-6 finishers in the US 100 were all OG winners during their career - Marsh, Greene, Mitchell, Drummond, Burrell and Lewis.

Prior to the 1990's did any other US 100 final have a top-6 who were all OG winners. If so, when and who. If not, what was the closest - when and who?

2/ Hal Davis was probably the greatest sprinter between Owens and Morrow. How many championship races did he lose, and which (if any)?

3/ An easy one - who was the first black athlete to win a major sprint title ? - OG/AAA/AAU/NCAA qualify as major

I'm guessing that would be 1920 where five of the top 6 all won Oly gold.

    1.Loren Murchison...4x1
    2.Jackson Sholz...200/4x1
    3.Charles Paddock....100/4x1
    4.Morris Kirksey....4x1
    5.Allen Woodring...200

He lost a 100 to Barney Ewell at the 1941 Nationals

Since Howard Drew was the first great black American sprinter. Tuskegees Mozelle Ellerbe would be the first great black sprinter from a HBCU school.

Firstly - in answer to the questions I had -

1/ 1920 was correct - but it's only part of the answer
2/ 1941 AAU 100 is also correct - and only part of the answer
3/ Howard Drew and Mozelle Ellerbe are both incorrect

Well all those with the 4x1 by their name won the 1920 Oly 4x1.
          Paddock won the 1920 100m
Woodring won the 1920 200m, beating Paddock
Sholz would win the 1924 200

Davis did lose the NCAA 100yd in 41? that was due to a slip out of the blocks. He would however end up 4th.

You sure somebody came before Howard Drew?

I was thinking 100/200 for some reason. You said...sprint...so that would be John Taylor 8-) who was the first Afro American to win an Olympic gold medal doing it in the 4x4.

I like to share Daisy, I know that some see it as showing off but that's not how I see it. I only have a few real passions in life other than my family, football, music, literature and track are about it. So the time has been spent 8-)

                              The answers were

1/ 1920 [Murchison, Scholz, Paddock & Kirksey - relay winners, plus Woodring], and 1964 - Hayes, Ashworth and Drayton - 64 relay winners + 68 relay winners Greene and Pender

2/ Hal Davis didn't run the '41 NCAA, but he did place 6th in the AAU 200 in 1939 having just finished at High School

3/ The key to the question was in the meets mentioned - OG/AAA/AAU/NCAA - the answer is Arthur Wharton (born in Ghana in 1865), who won the AAA title in 1886 in 10.0y. He was also the first black professional soccer player
