Yeah, you're right. Even though Frank Waller (400m/400mh 1904) could be 6th if he was born after december 10th 1886, since his exact birthdate is not known to me.

and not to make light of the others guys listed, but "making the Olympic team" in those years was just a tad easier than when Ryun and Mathias did it.

Extend the men's list to six and, by my reckoning, you get 17-263 for Mathias in 1948. And he won his event!

Better than youngest to compete would be youngest to win.

I nominate for your consideration Illinois schoolgirl Elizabeth Robinson who, at age 16, won the 100m dash on 31 July 1928 at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam.

Marg, Australia (Oops, sorry! I forgot the topic was about US athletes! Apologies!!

In individual event, maybe Cathy Hamblin(b.1/53), Pentathlon at Mexico City? I remember watching her compete here in Albuquerque. She retired, apparently, after '68.

Old vaulter knows all, as always... anyone with his dating history has to be respected. As for Mathias, had both his teammates won the Sullivan Award? And were they the only Americans to have done so?

How about Bob Mathias and the Sullivan award?
