  • Three Athletes, Two Olympic Gold Medals

Today (Thursday) we have three birthday athletes. See if you can guess them.
All three were born in Europe. The oldest is 63 today while the youngest is 43 today. We will call the oldest number 1 and the youngest is number 3. Number 2 is 53 years old today.

Number 1 competed in three Olympic Games and won one Olympic gold medal and one Olympic silver medal. Both medals came in different events. Number 1 was the first athlete from his country to win an Olympic gold medal. One week before he won his Olympic gold medal, he was run over by a car!

Number 2 competed in one Olympic Games and won one gold medal and one silver medal. Number 2 also competed in one world championship, winning three gold medals and one silver medal. This athlete was the first in the world to break a certain athletic barrier. Our birthday athlete currently holds a world record.

Number 3 won an Olympic silver medal. This birthday athlete held a world record for 13 years and won two gold medals in that event at the world championships. In fact, this athlete set that world record in winning a world championship gold medal.

Can you name numbers 1, 2, and 3?

Triplej, you did it again. This time three! Happy 63rd birthday today to Carlos Lopes (who was not injured when run over by a car in Lispon just days before the Los Angeles Olympic Games), happy 53rd birthday to Marita Koch (first woman to run 200 under 22 seconds), and happy 43rd birthday today to Colin Jackson (he never won an Olympic gold medal, but he still looks like he could today).

Marita Koch actually competed in two Olympic Games. In Montreal, she made the semis of the 400, but got injured and had to withdraw.

You're right. She ran 51.87 in the quarter-finals at Montreal.
