It's hard to believe he would have ever run in a 400-yard relay, since all the tracks were 440 yards. The number 8.6 has been used to describe his Tokyo anchor.

I think I had read somewhere that 7.8 was supposed to be the estimated time for the last 100 yards in Tokyo - which is close to the 90 meters from the end of the exchange zone to the finish. And keep in mind that Tokyo was on cinders, correct?

Who besides Bolt could maintain that kind of speed for 100m, esp. considering Hayes was nowhere near full speed at the beginning of his leg (even with the running start)?! Even Bolt only ran ca. 9.3 for his final 100 in his 19.19. Bullet Bob was THE GOAT for speed till UB arrived.
[not that I totally believe the 8.6; I've also seen 8.9, so I tend to think of it as 8.75ish. which is still mind-boggling.]

I still think Bullet Bob was the "naturally" fastest human we've seen. Meaning if there was no track he'd take off his shoes and roll up his pants and win any 40-100. Just a naturally fast guy.

A couple things about that 4x1. First off our second and third 100m guys Mel Pender and Trendon Jackson didn't run due to injuries sustained in the 100m. So the USA did run alternates. Not that Paul Drayton and Richard Stebbins weren't quality. I do hate to go here because I'm not into belittling Bullet Bob at all...but.....he didn't face anyone who made that 100m final on that anchor leg. As we know no Canada (Jerome) or Cuba (Figuerola) either. Still it was an amazing performance and has to be treated as such.

Houston McTear is another one who has to be on "just a naturally fast dude" list.

Your right it was a flying 100 yards, a guy e-mailed me he said Guinness Book of Records mid-sixties he thought 1963. If you find it let us know.

Its still amazing to watch. I don't care if the other anchors were not the top finalists - he is destroying that field, and pulling away at the end with his 3-4 metre lead, after being down several metres at the exchange.

I now think Bolt is the GOAT but still not certain anyone has ever run faster than Hayes in that anchor. Even if it is 8.75, remember that time is on wet clay.

you would know better than I, but are you sure the Tokyo track was wet? The weather précis in the T&FN account mentions only cloudy, and the story says nothing about precipitation.

Hayes also ran on a pretty sold college team while at FAMU. They had Alfred Austin who beat up on Hayes as high schoolers.....at first. They had NFLers to be Al Denson a 9.6 I think and Bob Paremore who was the other runningback along side Hayes at 9.4.

No the weather that day was dry but remember it rained several days during Tokyo so on that soft clay track, it couldn't have been really fully dried out by the relay.

If Hayes hadn't got out like he did in the 100 and had to play catch up, we probably would have seen histories first legal sub10.00 on that shabby dirt track.

Is there a video of his 9.91w?

Yes on youtube "100m Bob Hayes 1964" the one that runs
4:43 minutes by sportnotv3. Hayes crushed them in the semi final, the camera shot is around the 50m mark that's the thing he always won easy. He had nothing to prove after wining 48 100yd finals in a row!!! Also in Olympic cowboy he said lane one was soft
