    John Moon...Tenn A&I
    Paul Drayton...Villanova...would beat him in a 200
    Richard Stebbins...Grambling..would beat him in a 200
    Bernie Rivers...New Mexico
    Gerry Ashworth...Dartmouth
    Nate Adams...Purdue
    Trenton Jackson...Illinois
    Larry Dunn...Arizona/Army
    Mel Pender...Army
    John Roderick...SMU
    Henry Carr...Arizona State...would beat him in a 200
    Harry Jerome...Oregon/Canada...would beat him in a 100
    Roger Sayers...U of Omaha....would beat him in a 100
    Frank Budd...Villanova
    John Gilbert...Santa Barbara

Not sure he faced all those guys but they were the cream of the crop from 61-64.
Hayes did win 48 100yd/100m finals in a row against these guys. He was nowhere near that good at 200m even thought he tied the world record at 220yd in 20.6 into an 8 mph head wind.

And FSU would have had first shot at most of them if they had integrated just 4 years sooner than they did.
FAMU (Prairie View and Grambling did all right too!) and the TSU Tigerbelles could have the cream of the crop in those days.
There's a difference between the Tigerbelles and the other schools, where you're mostly talking about men's teams prior to integration of the southern schools. The men's programs were getting kids developed in high school programs.

The Tigerbelles were getting mostly kids from their own summer program for high schoolers. They had created their own feeder system, rather than tapping into an existing feeder. Much like Branch Rickey creating the first farm system in baseball for the 1930's Cardinals.

Jerome beat him in Modesto in a photo finish which was debatable or so I've read. Sayers beat him after an illness had laid Hayes up for a week...or so I read.

What a shame (not for Bob/Cowboys) he didn't stick around until 68. At what...26 or so "up there" in Mexico Cith vs a Jimmy Hines....what...9.85?

Re: Bob Hayes 7.8 4x100 yard relay?

In the book, It Was Never About a Hotdog and a Coke, by Rodney Hurst, more of a sociological treatise of life in Jacksonville and surrounding areas in the late 50s and early 60s, it notes that Al Austin, Robert Harris, Robert Paremore and Robert Hayes from FAMU, won the Drake Relays 4x 110 in 40.8, a "national record". It also mentions that Hayes beat Austin in their 3rd meeting and that they battled each other in HS for 2 yrs.

An interesting and perhaps just as athletic 'statement' was Bob Hayes played centerfield on his HSs baseball team and the coach would position the right and left fielders near their respective foul lines - thus leaving Hayes to cover virtually the entire outfield. I think their baseball team was undefeated with perhaps his football team as well. Not totally sure on those.

Robert Harris....yeah, remember the name now.

I once saw a video of Hayes as a Rattler running back. He took a pitch out and simply turned it on outrunning angles......amazing. Houston McTear was a running back in HS, averaged over 13 yards a carry while at Baker. Wish I could have witnessed some of that action.

Hayes' won-loss record in the 100y/m was truly impressive. At 200/220, the best at that time was thought to be Henry Carr. Hayes did beat him on at least two occasions. Neil Allen of World Sports - quoted elsewhere in this thread - was not too sure who was the better over the furlong. And if he equalled the WR against a 8 mph wind, WOW is the only comment.

Hayes held the "Negro" Florida State 100yd record as a soph. in 9.6
His power came from sprinting up near vertical Horror Hill at Florida A&M and in 3 years was never beaten to the top. Google (Bob Hayes SI Vault) article on page 5.
