He did in Munich 1972.He made the final and pulled up 'lame' at 80m. After that race,that was pretty much the end of his Track an Field career as a athlete. But he got his satisfaction in both Seoul 1988 & Barcelona 1992, where he coached
both individual 400m champions, Steve Lewis in '88
who also won the 4x400m relay as part of the successful USA Team,and ironicnally in 1992 aswell, and also Quincy Watts in '92 who aswell as Steve also won the 4x400m gold medal as part of the USA Team.
Steve Lewis still holds the Men's World Junior record for 400m at 43.87s.
And Quincy Watts is currently still Third on the All-Time lists 400m for Men credited with a time of 43.50s.
And as we all know, John Smith is now a great coach and a fantastic ambassador for the sport of Track and Field and the 'H.S.I' Team.
