Without clearing 7ft he did get to within 1/4 inch of Buddy Davis' WR.
Did not know he was a sculptor. Good for him!

Nice, very interesting article, Jhc68...thanks for sharing.
I've always been interested in the high jump...built my own pit at the edge of our orange grove..sawdust and wood chips. I used to come home from school and go jump for a couple of hours. I'd pretend that 5 feet was 7 feet (I wasn't very good), used the western roll and jumped a "WR" of 5 feet 4 inches!

Re: Interesting article @ Ernie Shelton...
According to info from Geoff Nelson, Shelton was the first to jump 6'11" or better more than once:
31 July '54 6' 11 1/16"
10 June '55 6' 11 1/4"
18 June '55 6' 11 1/8"
And he was a very capable decathlete as well.

Freaking press just won't leave the poor bastard alone!
How about all of those sucky Life magazine photos. Why didn't they just jump up and down on his body while they were at it?
He was a great athlete. Saw him many times. Very classy guy."Who's Kidding Who?"
