  • Last American mPV WR-holder

Pretty straight-forward question (no tricks). Who was the last American man to hold the outdoor World Record. The answer kinda surprised me!

I'm pretty sure it was Dave Roberts at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene in June of 1976. I was there and remember him jumping about 18' 8". You could almost count on a world pole vault record at the U.S. Olympic Trials, like Bob Seagren, Fred Hansen, Don Bragg, etc. Not any more.

Yup! Isn't it sad to think that the event we once DOMINATED hasn't had a WR-holder in 34 years?

I was also there. Remember he broke his pole earlier and had to borrow one from, I believe, Earl Bell.

However, Mike Tully, in 1978, really should be the last one. Getting screwed by the officials, with a rule that is no longer around.

Yup. 5.70m. Four years later, came Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz at 5.72 in May 1980.

I would go with Billy Olson around 1985 or 1986.

Thanks, Becca, those are not his 19-1 jump but great pics.. most people have forgotten or never knew that Joe was a 25 foot long jumper and heck of a sprinter in HS..

I don't remember the year (mid 80's), but I saw Billy Olson set a WR indoors in the old Vitalis meet. It was the second WR I saw set in the Meadowlands, The first (different year) was the first sub 3:50 indoors. I am still hoping to witness my first outdoor WR some day...

1986. He had a 5.93 (19' 5½") that, despite being regarded as the WR at the time, somehow went unrecognized as the AR later on. Bubka broke it, anyway, with 5.95 (19' 6¼") at the USA Indoor Champs in the Garden.

Why is it sad? I thought this sort of nationalism was quite passé...
