My BS meter is off the charts on this one . . .
Especially since a pedometer only measures the number of strides one takes, not the length of them. There are lots of tiny little steps in a basketball game. But, then again, this is a thread about "Fiction, Not Facts"!
I share yall's skepticism. 26 miles in two elapsed hours with 40 minutes of action. Nah.
Re: How fast could Muhammad Ali run the 100 yards/meters in??
Anytime an athlete outside of track and field makes a reference about track and field it is very likely to be laughable to anybody in track and field, from 40-yard clockings to fantastic leaps in street clothes, but the Havlicek comment has got to take the freaking cake! Geez, compared to this, comments about elevated testosterone levels enhanced by beer drinking and sexual conquests numbering in the tens of thousands are mere child's play. Imagine--a marathon in every game!

Would be interesting to know how much distance a basketball, soccer player, linebacker, etc cover in a game?
Especially soccer.. surely someone has plotted this.. I can believe it is several miles in a 90 minute game.
Actually it is done all the time. On FSC for the Champions League games, they commonly have a statistic for a couple of players, whom I presume are wearing GPS monitors, with the accuracy they use. It usually comes out to between 5 and 6 miles.

The most admirable statistical number in association football I can remember came from Sergey Semak, the captain of the Russian national football team, who covered more than 16,000 metres in the quarterfinal against Netherlands in Euro 2008. Of course, the game went into the extra time thus it was 120 minutes of action. With two pauses respectively of 15 minutes (half-time) and 5 minutes (after the regular time).
Talking about normal circumstance, wing-backs and defensive midfielders are usually those who run the most in a team; one such player that averages 10-11km during a 90-minute match would already be considered to be very diligent and have great endurance, that's why Semak was so impressive.

It usually comes out to between 5 and 6 miles ... I have heard almost identical estimates.
I doubt that Ali could have run 100y much faster than 12.5 - 13.0. Tightens way up starting @ 50 yds and loses any form he had. On the other hand I was really hoping he and Wilt were going to seal the deal and fight. Ali in 6 - if they are serious and not show boatin. Then Chamberlain's 7'4" would dump Ali's 7'0". And volleyball would ....And Wilt's WR vs Ali's DB would turn out like a 1 : 1 basketball game - for the same reason. Yea - thats the ticket.
