  • Nick Newton honored by Olympians at party

Nick Newton -- Masters Hall of Famer, L.A. Mercurettes mentor and inventor of the Newton starting blocks -- was honored by more than 70 friends and family members Saturday in Pomona, east of Los Angeles. He hasn't been in the best of health, so his longtime friend Rufus Morris Jr. planned a party in his honor, and got super help from George and Nona Cohen.

At least five Olympic sprinters attended the party, including John Carlos, Guy Abrahams, Rosalyn Bryant and Barbara Ferrell Edmonson.

Nick also received a framed proclamation from U.S. Rep. Bob Filner of San Diego, who declared May 22 as Nick Newton Day in the 51st Congressional District of California.

I took photos and wrote an account of the festivities:

Gwen Gardner from 1980, but I tend to call them Olympic team members.
