  • Order of the Badge of Honor

Happy birthday today to an athlete who owns every Olympic medal except the bronze one (and he didn't get them at a pawn shop).
This birthday Olympian comes from a country about the same size in area as the state of Idaho.
Our birthday athlete is 77 years old today (Tuesday).
This Olympic champion competed for the largest country in area in the world.
When this person won the Olympic gold medal, it was an Olympic record.
Anyone know who this champion is with a May 25th birthday?
Hint: He was awarded the "Order of the Badge of Honor".

The geography is easy... actually working out who the athlete is, not so easy. Please go back to people from 100 years ago, I had a better success rate with them

OK, here are some additional hints. When this man won the Olympic gold medal, it was raining. He was 31 years old when he won the Olympic championship. He had never finished higher than third place in his national championships prior to winning the Olympics. A couple of years after his first Olympic Games, he won the European championships in the same event.
This athlete never held the world record, but he did have a three-year winning streak. When he took the silver medal at his second Olympic Games, the man that won the gold medal came from a country just about the same size in area as the state of Indiana.

Strength in depth from a huge country. I'm guessing it's a hammer thrower. Don't ask me who though.

We have a winner! Happy birthday today to Romuald Klim and congratulations to jeremyp. Klim, of course, won the hammer throw in Tokyo (1964) and came back in Mexico City (1968) to take the silver medal.

It is also a little known fact that he was a distant (East European) cousin of Klim Kadiddlehopper.

I recall that I posted a silly trivia question a few years back, asking for the name of an Olympic Champ whose name was a beverage spelled backwards.. it was quickly answered !

I was going to give the clue: "Klim Kadiddlehopper drinks milk." I figured that would give it away too quickly.
