    Re: John Carlos Quiz

John CARLOS was of course one of the greatest
    natural talents of his time.
I believe, during his whole career he ran quite
far from the top of his really incredible
    potential.
As the French T&F historian wrote judiciously,
John CARLOS was a whimsical athlete who needed
to be bathed in some kind of injustice, like a
    martyr, to reach excellence...

My opinion is that John Carlos was one of the great sprinters of all time and that his ego and urge to self-promote are even greater than his physical talents were.

Like to make another comment. In his book, John claims that he could have won both the 100 & 200 meters in the 1968 Olympics. In the 200 final he was clearly in the lead coming into the straight but "allowed" Tommie Smith to pass him for the Gold Medal & would settle for the silver. Why would a competitive world class athlete think that way at the moment of his greatest challenge -The Olympic Final in front of a World wide audience?
I could never figure that out.
    Any opinions out there?
