  • Line up with most WR-holders....

This isn't a trivia question as such... just something that I'd like to know, really.

The other week I was watching my tape of the '93 WCh, and I noticed that the women's 400mH final had three WR holders (past, present and future). Ponomaryova (who finished 3rd) was the previous WR holder back in 1984 (although she ran a faster time in Stuttgart than her previous WR!). Sally Gunnel set the WR in that race, and then Kim Batten (who finished 4th in Stuttgart) later went on to break the WR just a couple years later.

All in all, there were 3 athletes in that race who were at one point a WR holder. I know that Sandra Farmer-Patrick also dipped under the previous WR in Stuttgart, but that doesn't count!

In the 1986 European Championships (also in Stuttgart), there were three WR holders in the final (Stepanova, Busch, and Ponomaryova).

I'm just wondering if there's been a final (in any standard Olympic/WCh event) where there's been several WR holders (past, present and future) all together in the line-up. There's gotta be some sort of final where more than 3 WR holders have been present...??

Greene, Bambuck, Hines & Smith (Ronnie Ray version) in the '68 AAU 100 final (all having tied/set WRs in the semis).

Montreal 100 final Stecher, Richter, Helten, and Gohr (Oelsner). What about Munich 1500 women? How many times was the world record broken before the final?

Munich PV qualifying: Nordwig, Seagren, Papanicolau & Isaksson, with Johnson (indoor WR) for good measure.

I just couldn't be fast enough to correct that one apparently.

Just because of the size of the fields, wouldn't there have been some walk or marathon that would have had a few in them?

Or to take it off topic a bit-some World Cross event that had a bunch in them?

Within the parameters of the query, 4 Oly/WC finalists, this is the first with four males:
'68 Oly discus final: Oerter, Danek, Silvester, Bruch.

Since hand-timing was permitted for record purposes in 1968, there were 6 in the women's 100 final : Tyus, Ferrell, Szewinska, Boyle, Bailes and Cheng. to best of my knowledge Ferrell, Bailes and Boyle all had at one time or another a share in the hand-timed 11.1 WR.

Well delete Boyle from that list, apparently not.

For some strange reason I have a recollection of Boyle running 11.1 in 1967, but it must be faulty memory or something.
