Re: Line up with most WR-holders....

The 1982 European Championships had 4 WR holders in the women's JT line up (Sofia Sakorafa, Tiina Lillak, Petra Felke, Fatima Whitbread).

"How about in the 1 mile? What's the most guys that lined up to start, and/or finished, with multiple WR holders either current or previous?"

This doesn't really count, but the exhibition mile held at the Iffley Road track in May 1994 (the day after the Bannister dinner) included Ryun, Snell, and a couple others that skip my mind right now (as well as non-outdoor WR holders such as Keino, Vasala, and Coghlan).

There are probably a decent number of races with 3 former/current/future WR holders (if you also include 1500s): for example:
-Coe's 3:48.53 WR (also Cram, Walker)
-1984 Olympic 1500 (Coe, Ovett, Cram)
-Cram's 3:46.32 WR (also Coe, Walker)
-Aouita's 3:29.46 WR (also Maree and Walker)

I'm sure I'm overlooking a bunch of others...

Well you equalled that yourself - the five from 1968 OG 100m final (Tyus, Ferrell, Szewinska, Bailes, Cheng)...

Can we get a 'six' anywhere.....?

            >(all having tied/set WRs in the semis).

Greene, Bambuck, Hines and Jerome meet the criteria from the '68 Oly 100m final if Jerome's WR in the 100 yd counts.

At 1500 meters: 5 in the 1954 European Championshps--Roger Bannister, Gunnar Nielsen, Stanislav Jungwirth, Werner Lueg, Sandor Iharos. Interestingly, three of the five had "only" tied the 1500m WR (Bannister, Lueg, and Nielsen).

So far Montreal women's 100 is the best assemblage of record holders - no ties, no hand-timing.

How about a refinement: Championship final with the most top placings filled by WR holders. I'll start with the '84 OG HJ at 4: Mogenburg, Sjoberg, Jinahua and Stones.

Also, the Seoul HJ had 5 WR holders in the top 8: Povarnitsyn, Sjoberg, Mogenburg, Thranhardt (indoor) and Paklin.

If it hadn't been for the Cuban boycott, the addition of Sotoymayor would have made it six!

Only another 4 World Record holders in the '76 Oly Discus, but the first three, Wilkins, Schmidt and Powell, got the medals. The fourth, Silvester, joins his second group of four (see above) while finishing 8th.

1936 Olympic trials high jump: Marty, Johnson, Albritton, Walker, Steers if he was there (he was eligible, but I forget whether gh once responded on another thread that he didn't compete). (Let's not have any of this "has to be world record holder going in" stuff; the thread started with a 400mh hurdle race that preceded Batten's wr.)
