  • The Best That I Can Be

Birthday athlete for today (Wednesday) turns 75 years old today. You know him because he competed in two Olympic Games, taking a silver medal and then a gold medal.

In his first Olympics, he qualified for two events, however finished only one of them. Before he ever competed in the Olympic Games, he won the Pan American Games gold medal.

In college he wanted to be a dentist and he played for John Wooden. The year he won the Olympic gold medal, he also won the Sullivan Award and he carried the flag of his country during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

His daughter also competed in the Olympic Games and his son did not qualify for the Olympics.

He missed the Pan American Games before he won his Olympic gold medal because of an automobile accident.

You may have seen this Olympic champion in some movies. He also did some television work in the Los Angeles area.

Today he lives in the San Fernando Valley and will celebrate his 75th birthday today. Know this man?

That I'm not sure about that, however I do know that he was elected student body president of his college.

He and his brother are Hall of Famers in separate sports.

Another great fact. His daughter made the Olympic team, but not in track and field.

He turns 76 next year. Rafer was born in 1935. My sources include Frank Zarnowski and the UCLA athletic center.
