In honor of David Rudisha's new world record today (Sunday) in Berlin, we say happy 42nd birthday today to an Olympic champion at 800 meters. This birthday athlete started out as a 400 meter runner and then moved up one lap. He was the NCAA champion and was third at the Olympic Trials in Kenya. You might remember the NBC blunder in calling this Olympic final, but can you remember his name? His initials are the same as an important class in most American schools.

Re: New World Record
Nice work, LopenUupunut and happy birthday today to Paul Ereng, winner of the gold medal in Seoul, 1988, at 800 meters. Ereng, of course, went to the University of Virginia and was the NCAA champion at 800. Paul never broke the world record, however he did beat Joaquim Cruz and Said Aouita to win the Olympic gold medal. Paul Ereng is one of three Kenyans to win the men's Olympic 800 meters gold medal.
