  • Oddest Grouping

Ok track experts. Show your stuff. Who are some of the individuals who had the strangest talents. That is: were world ranked (or one of the best in the world) in very different track events.

Example: Geb in the indoor 1500 and the marathon.

    Re: Oddest Grouping

I'll knock out some of the easy ones.

    Rod Dixon - 1500 / Marathon

    Said Aouita - 800m / 10,000m

    Steve Ovett - 800m / 1/2 Marathon

But that is range. Any decatholetes world class in two vary different events?

Strangest Talents? Phil "Tiny" Kane could piss into a second floor window from the ground.

That could mean either high velocity or maybe superior equipment.

I can do it in the opposite direction :-)

Eva Wilms was a world class SPer and pentathlete in the '70s. That was a strange pairing.

Things at lower level are more common, I suspect. I think Kingdom won the GA state meet in the DT as well as 110H.

I also heard (verbally, maybe urban legend) that Wilt Chamberlin won the 120HH, HJ and SP at the PA state meet.

New Zealand hammer record holder Tasha Williams finished 3rd in the 100m adn 1st in the hammer at the New Zealand national championships.

Pat O'Callaghan (Ireland) threw an unofficial world record of 59.55m in the hammer throw (1937). He also had a personal best of 1.88m in the high jump and 14.75m in the shot-put.

Elvira Ozolina was the first female athlete to pass the 60m mark in the Javelin (61.38m in 1964). However, in the 80m hurdles, she had a personal best of 11.4

                Irina Privalova - 60m, 60mH, 100m, 100mH, 200m, 400m, 400mH and now 800m. she also high-jumped 1.72m at age 13 and long-jumped 6.45m at age 15.

                Marita Koch - 50m up to 400m

The two Chinese athletes Junxia and Yunxia - 1500m, 3000m, 5,000m, 10,000m, and Marathon!

                Mac Wilkins: Shot Put - 21.06i (77); Discus Throw - 70.98 (80); Hammer Throw - 63.66 (1977); Javelin Throw - 78.44 (1970).

                Tessa Sanderson: 200m - 24.89 (81); 400m - 57.3 (72); 800m - 2:26.20 (81); 100mH - 13.46 (81); 400mH - 60.46 (77); HJ - 1.69 (73); LJ - 5.97 (81); SP - 13.27 (81); JT - 73.58 (83); Heptathlon - 6125p (81).

Petra Felke long jumped 6.30m at age fifteen... but she also threw the javelin 50m at the same age, so she chose that event.

Ralph Boston had respectable marks in the TJ, PV, HJ and 120y hurdles.

Joao Carlos De Oliveira (former WR in TJ with 17.89m) had a 100m PB of 10.1 and a LJ best of 8.36m

                Sonia O'Sullivan (bit of a female Geb!): 800 - 2:00.69 (1993); 1500 - 3:58.95 (1985); 3000 - 8:21.64 (1994); 5000 - 14:41.02 (2002); 10000 - 30:53.37 (2000); Half-Marathon - 70:05 (1999); Marathon - 2:30:40 (2000)

                Similar girl to Sonia - Tatyana Pozdnyakova (Ukraine): 800 - 1:57.5 (82); 1000 - 2:34.13 (82); 1500 - 3:56.50 (82); 2000 - 5:29.64 (84)
                3000 - 8:32.00 (84); 5000 - 15:16.37 (89); 10000 - 31:48.94 (83); Half-Marathon - 70:04 (93); Marathon - 2:29:25 (98)
A 16-17 year span between the 800m and Marathon!

Werner Gunthor (who had a SP best of 22.75m) could also HJ 2.00m!

A more recent day multi-talented guy is Christian Olsson - 17.83i TJ and 2.28m HJ - world class in both events.

JJK, of course, was world class in 100mH, 200m, HJ, LJ, and Heptathlon.

Spanish triple-jumper Carlota Castrejano has been to the Olympics three times... 1992 - Basketball; 1996 - High jump, 2000 - Triple jump.

Marcus le Grange (44.65 400m guy) has ran a 13.7 110mH (anyone would think he'd try for the 400mH!!), and has LJ'ed 7.80m and ran the 100m in 10.3

Peter Blank (88.70m JT guy) has also HJ'ed 2.23m.

Brit girl Lee McConnel used to be a 1.88m HJ'er before she turned to 400m (her 400m best is 50.82).

This I posted before on another thread, but it fits here even better.
Alexandra Chudina (USSR) - world class in HJ, LJ, JT, Pent, spiker on the volleyball team.

Paul Edwards, disgraced Brit SP-er (20.33m) could also jump over 2.00m (2.03m I think)...he was, of course, juiced to the gills and banned for life.

One year, as I recall, Rafer Johnson was the best three thrower in the United States (shot, discus and javelin), in another year he made the Olympic team in the broad jump and (not in the same year) he recorded 13.8 for the high hurdles, 22.7 in the lows.

Didn't Bob Seagren in addition to pole vaulting, run an 880 relay leg for his college or club at one time?

I'm not sure of the specifics but I would assume from the legends that Jim Thorpe would have been world class as many different evens in his day.
