  • 800 trivia

About a week ago we had a front-page link to an IAAF story about the last four men's WR holders in the 800 (Juantorena-Coe-Kipketer-Rudisha) meeting in Monaco.

A few days later, all four attended the IAF Gala. Other invitees included the athletes who had been nominated for AOY, the IAAF Council, IAAF Committee Chairs, the IAAF Press Commission, the Diamond League meet directors and assistant directors, reps of the 2010 World Athletics Series meets, and some IAAF staff.

    OK, here's the trivia question:

At the Gala, Juantorena did not have the fourth fastest PR in the room, nor was he the only Olympic gold medalist. The person who was the 4th-fastest was not a gold medalist, so we're looking for two names here.

Joaquim Cruz should be the 4th fastest.
Vebjorn Rodal, Norway the gold medalist?

I guess the focus was on the record setters, rather than simply all timers, too bad. The video is interesting, links are below. Juantorena is quite a card, funny guy. Considering what these guys have accomplished, for the most part they come off as a modest bunch. Juantorena almost appears as if he were amazed at himself, and still has a sense of disbelief.

Coe sure has a short memory - there were 4 rounds in LA. Cruz's sequence of times was one of the greatest ever.

Yeah, but Cruz is also a gold medalist. But was he in the room? I'm at sea here :?

So there was another Gold medallist, who didn't run faster than AJ in the room and someone who had run faster than 1.43.44 but didn't win OG.

            is that right ? :?

Steve Cram for the 800 runner with a better pr than El Caballo in the room, and was William Tanui in the vicinity as well?

I would think Steve Cram is the best guess so far. But Tanui has a better pr than Juantorena. So could Nils Schumann have been in the room?

Yes, that's what I thought! Perhaps he's getting forgetful in his old age. He was there and ran the 4 rounds in 4 days himself. Perhaps he meant after LA? Did they change it to 4 rounds?

Nobody has named either person yet. A clue: the fourth-fastest didn't win an Olympic medal.

Another clue: both of the people in question are now in the same line of work, hence the listing at the beginning of all the groups involved.

Second clue: one of them is a trick question.

Should have come back to this thread earlier?

                            Bungei and/or Borzakovskiy?
