  • Te Aroha College

Happy 72nd birthday today (Friday) to someone who won three Olympic gold medals in two Olympic Games.

This someone also set world records during a great, but fairly short career. One of those records is still the national record.

Our birthday athlete's father was an electrial engineer.

This Olympic gold medalist was a pretty good tennis player in school and later became a pretty good orienteer.

Can you guess who this athlete is?

Apparently nobody's answering because it's too obvious

Did the father being an electrical engineer give it away?

Yes, that pretty much spoils it

It's the headline that gives it away, actually.

Peter Snell had a tennis background.

Yes, Peter Snell was a fairly good tennis player in school, but turned out to be an even better middle distance runner. With his gold medal in the 800 at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960 (he was 21 years old) and his two gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, Peter Snell had quite a career by the age of 25.

Nice job, Bruce Kritzler and happy birthday today to Peter Snell.
