  • Another great one gone, Ollie Matson

He and hustling Hugh were the great ones of the era.

Long piece, but still doesn't do justice to his track career (although one can understand why).

The 1951 USF football team was really something. Many players to the NFL (some indirectly, as they dropped football at the end of the season, so many finished elsewhere), 3 to the hall. I'm pretty sure I never saw Matson play live. From 1955-60, I got to go to Kezar once a year, and I watched the games where someone had a TV set. I guess Ollie's final years were pretty grim, probably Alzheimers.

I remember him playing in the Pro Bowl in the Los Angeles Coliseum. I remember him as a blur on the field and the most exciting runner of his day. May he rest in peace.

I have a football card of Ollie when he was still with the Chicago Cardinals. The LA Rams traded nine players to get him. He was that special.

Ran a 9.6 as a high schooler and lead the nation in the 400.
