kuha, I was even thinking that same thought as I typed, but I just made it simple thinking of his '96 OG win. But you are certainly correct, his superstar status was earlier than '96.
I saw him for the first time at the Brussels meet in '94. He was the new 5000 record holder, but we didn't really know how good he was. That night, he went for the 10,000 record and failed--he went out pretty quickly, at record pace, but "died" in the last 1/3 of the race and ran something like 27:20...fairly impressive, of course, but not awesome. The next time I saw him was at Zurich in '95...and it WAS awesome--the most mind-blowing single performance I've ever seen.
