Other than Bob Hayes, who were the American sprinters who made up the gold medal team in the Rome Olympics? Who was the Russian sprinter, who was passed by Hayes in the anchor leg?

Re: Olympic 400 meter relay team
Not really. I have had Devine Intervention. The sprinter's name is Gerald (Gerard?) Ashworth. He ran for Essex Catholic (NJ) in HS and went to and competed for Dartmouth College. This is my memory. It still is subject to correction.

Re: Olympic 400 meter relay team
gerry ashworth did NOT run for or attend Essex Catholic unless I am sadly mistaken. He is from New Hampshire, and went to a Prep Scholl up there before going to Dartmouth. That was trivia question I asked a few weks ago, that no pone answerefd 9 name of prep school )
Marty Liquori and Mark Murro went to Essex Catholic.

Re: Olympic 400 meter relay team
The Jewish Sports Hall of Fame website seems to be missing Mr. Ashworth's biography, but another site (www.jewsinsports.com) lists his home town as Haverhill, Massachusetts. Somehow, I'm not too sure a Jewish guy from Massachusetts would go to a Catholic school in New Jersey.
This brings up another question - Gerry's PR is 21.2 - my high school in Massachusetts has a school record of 21.2 from the same era (1959). How many Massachusetts folks have run faster (I can think of one of the top of my head - Ed Collymore)

Re: Olympic 400 meter relay team
When 100 meter men Mel Pender and Trenton Jackson went down due to injuries that put Gerry Ashworth out of Dartmouth and 200 meter man Paul Drayton of Villanova fame on the team.
The team was going to be......
Mel Pender....9.3
Trenton Jackson.....9.4
Dick Stebbins.....9.2
Bob Hayes....9.1

Re: Olympic 400 meter relay team
Let me clear a bit of this up. jerry (or Gerry) Krumeich was a sprinter at Bergan Catholic High School (class of 1962 I believe). The other great sprinter in the area was Sam Perry of Passaic High School. Sam went on tho stardom and won some big 60 yard dashes at the garden for Fordham. Not sure about Krumeich re college. In any event, in June of their senior high school year, the two met in the New Jersey State AAU meet in Clifton with Krumeich running a 9.55 100 yard dash, just nipping Perry. As for the Ashworth connection, you may be thinking of a quarter miler from New Jersey at the same time named Steve Ashurst. Ashurst went to U Kansas, as did the pre-eminent NJ quarter miler, Dwight Peck, from Pascak Valley.
