  • AREVA Challenge Team

Happy 40th birthday today (Thursday) to an Olympic champion with a decathlon best of over 7,400 points.

Our birthday boy not only won Olympic gold, but also gold at the World Indoor Championships and gold at the World Junior Championships.

His uncle won an Olympic gold medal at the Mexico City Olympic Games in 1968.

This champion has the same initials as our 20th U.S. president.

In winning the Olympic gold medal, this person set an Olympic record.

The Olympic gold medal was won in a capital city.

Name this Olympic gold medalist, born forty years ago this day in June.

Got it, though the clues are highly tricky... good thing I recently went through all the US presidents

Hint: For those of you that don't know the 20th U.S. president, it's not a shot in the dark.

I was thrown off by the capital city clue, until realizing that, of course, Atlanta is the capital of Georgia . . .

Jean Galfione is the answer. By the way, his 5.75 PV clearance during a 1996 decathlon is the second highest ever in the event (Tim Lobinger also tried a few decathlons, and cleared 5.76 once).

Very good, DecFan, it is Jean Galfione. Galfione, of course, won the pole vault in Atlanta in 1996 and turned forty years old yesterday. I believe he had a strong interest in sailing and was part of the AREVA Challenge sailing team after his pole vaulting career. He wasn't a bad decathlete, either.

Correct. It was at the DC railroad station, but am unaware of the lighting situation.

Garfield was shot in the train station during the middle of the day.
