  • Bubka - 100 m

The article at today's headlines, seems to be way over the top. Bubka was a great athlete, but to suggest he could have run 100m with a pole in hand in just over 10 sec. How much over 10 sec.? - 3 s maybe?

I remember Bubka had run a 10.3 100m...he was fast but not as fast as the article purported. But no doubt his record at 6.14 is one of the best WR's and his speed, control, strength and technique were extraordinary...

And look at the latest crop of world class vaulters...no one is even close.

Considering he could have easily jumped a FOOT (30cm) over today's best, you ain't whistlin' Dixie.

        Re: Bubka - 100 m

Has anybody ever actually been timed in a 100m with a pole? Even the 10.3 cited above is likely urban legend.

As I understand it, it was a 10.3 without a pole. And I don't believe it was in an official competition, either.

Maybe he ran the 10.30 in the same race Marian Woronin ran the 10.00. Would meet the definition of running 10.3 with a Pole

I heard that he actually did the 10.3 while carrying a Pole. That's what made him so strong for the vault.

Even the Great Bubka could not break 11.0 WITH a pole, probably not even 12.

He has been credited with a 10.0 mps speed on the runway, aka 1.0 sec per 10 meters. Top sprinters are achieving top speeds of sub-0.85 splits per 10m. If we equate an .85 with a 10.00 (close), then Bubka's speed is closer to mid-11. And that could NOT be sustained for 100m.

Appreciate your info on this actual question Marlow, but I want to be sure you know I was trying to make a silly joke (that evidently failed...)

A great thread from 2004 on PVP about fast pole vaulters can be found here:

                    http://www.polevaultpower.com/forum/vie ... f=2&t=2846

Lots of heavy hitters posted on this...page 8 is my source to back up almost all Bubka 100m stories being "urban legend."

But are they talking 100 metres with a flying start for this time? That might get him close to 10.3, possibly, although it is still probably a stretch.

'They' are nobody. It's all made up. I can believe he ran something close to a 10.3 hand-timed 100, blocks start, NO pole. No one, not even Bolt could run 11.x with a 17' pole.

Can we look towards two WRs in this event? One pole carried longitudinally, the other transversely. What is the total width of a track with 8 lanes?
