The article at today's headlines, seems to be way over the top. Bubka was a great athlete, but to suggest he could have run 100m with a pole in hand in just over 10 sec. How much over 10 sec.? - 3 s maybe?

Re: Bubka - 100 m
I remember Bubka had run a 10.3 100m...he was fast but not as fast as the article purported. But no doubt his record at 6.14 is one of the best WR's and his speed, control, strength and technique were extraordinary...
And look at the latest crop of world class vaulters...no one is even close.

Re: Bubka - 100 m
Originally posted by Master PoI heard that he actually did the 10.3 while carrying a Pole. That's what made him so strong for the vault.
He has been credited with a 10.0 mps speed on the runway, aka 1.0 sec per 10 meters. Top sprinters are achieving top speeds of sub-0.85 splits per 10m. If we equate an .85 with a 10.00 (close), then Bubka's speed is closer to mid-11. And that could NOT be sustained for 100m.

Re: Bubka - 100 m
A great thread from 2004 on PVP about fast pole vaulters can be found here:

Lots of heavy hitters posted on this...page 8 is my source to back up almost all Bubka 100m stories being "urban legend."

Originally posted by bambamBut are they talking 100 metres with a flying start for this time? That might get him close to 10.3, possibly, although it is still probably a stretch.
