  • 20 Today (2.40M AR)

Today marks the 20th anniversary (07.08.1991) of Mr. Charles Austin's historic 2.40M American record jump at Zurich Weltklasse.

    Pl. Athlete Nat. Birth Result
    1. Charles AUSTIN USA 67 2.40
    2. Patrik SJÖBERG SWE 65 2.31
    3. Artur PARTYKA POL 69 2.25
    3. Troy KEMP BAH 66 2.25
    3. Dalton GRANT GBR 66 2.25
    3. Hollis CONWAY USA 67 2.25
    3. Arturo ORTIZ ESP 66 2.25
    8. Dragutin TOPI? YUG 71 2.25

Following his 2.29M runner-up finish at the USA national championships in New York, Mr. Austin was able to manufacture that incredible 2.40M clearance and then jump 2.38 for an =CR at the 1991 IAAF World Championships, defeating Mr. Sotomayor (2.36M), and Mr. Austin's rival and nemesis, Mr. Conway (2.36M).

What were your impressions of Mr. Austin when you saw him jump? Was he one of those talents which you knew would ultimately rise to stardom?
    Fire Impossible.

When I first saw him when he set foot on the SWT campus? No, I never would have imagined he would set an AR that would stand for 20+ years. He was a decent high school jumper from a very small school.
