I KNOW Carl LEWIS was hs record holder in LJ at Willingboro NJ but how good was he as a sprinter? What places did he get in the state and other big eastern meets .My memory from 20yrs. ago was that he was like his sister Carol , just one of many good hs dashers and only highly recruited because of LJ.

Well (from memery) he ran 9.5/9.3w in HS, but as you say he concentrated on LJ. Hope you took in a Super-12 game while in Australasia - rugby a game where you have big guys who are athletes - none of these 350lb monsters who collapse after 2 minutes trotting around -

I'm not sure if you're referring to football players, but you'd actually be pretty surprised how fast, quick and athletic NFL linemen are.Comment

Surely one of you "experts" can tell me how Carl did in NJ State meet in 100 in 79 & 80. I DON'T have back issues of those years. Also I know he wrote a book because I BORROWED it . HELP please!Comment

I read his book ("Inside Track") but I don't recall him dwelling much on his high school career. Mostly dealt with college/pro stuff and the issue of steroids and his rivalry with Johnson.
I could be wrong though, he may have talked more about his high school days. My memory is a bit foggy. And I'm knee-deep in final exams.Comment

I too read "Inside Track" and was surprised to not see one work-out he ever did mentioned. Is it just me or should someone of that stature have mentioned a hard session here or there or a favorite work-out that they had.
I was coaching in NJ when he was in HS and I think he won both sprints as a senior. I distinctly remember Dennis Mitchell winning both sprints at the Meet of Champs on a beautiful Wednesday night in June, but that was a year or two later.Comment

Seem to recall Carl jumping 26-6 1/2 at Pan Am Games (Puerto Rico?) to medal, in summer after senior year of HS.
The next year (frosh at UH) he really emerged as a sprinter, making 4x100 team for Moscow, that didn't get to compete.Comment

In his senior year he ran 9.5y and 20.9m, which were =23rd and 10th on the HS lists that year. He was #2 (for his LJing) in the HS AOY voting behind Michael Carter.Comment

I remember Reading an article about Lewis. I believe he was a Great Sprinter as well, he Competed on the National Level as a Jr. Because that's where he first went Head to head with Johnson... I belive Lewis won in 10.43??? something like that, But he was a far better LJer in High School, Not sure of his times, or distance. I wish I could've helped you outComment

My former PA (physician's assistant) went to high school with Carl and Carol Lewis, and was good friends with Carol. Her recollection was that she almost never saw Carl as he was always travelling to meets. She's not certain how he ever graduated.Comment
