Offered as food for thought for Doris and any other folks contemplating hip replacement.
She had an awesome career, but why is she having a hip replacement. If she is still able to run - as the story makes clear - opting for a hip replacement seems premature. I speak from somewhat similar experience having run quite consistently from age 14 - age 58, especially the last 25 of those 35 years. Arthritis forced me to stop - I had some excruciating episodes while still trying to "run through it" - but once I stopped and started taking glucosamine, the hip improved a bit and then stabilized. Now, over 8 years later, I fear it is getting worse, but at least I avoided surgery for a good many years. And, since I plan to live a good while longer, if I do ultimately have a replacement, hopefully it will last me for the "duration."
