DF's 10.13 has always seemed less than kosher. WHAT were circumstances of that 100 m hs record? Henry NEAL's 10.15 much more likely .

Re: Derrick Florence / SATCH query
Came at the national Junior championships, so it stands to reason that the level of officiating should have been pretty good. And he had a 1.9 wind and if he caught a perfect start you could come up with an "anomalous" time that was perfectly legal. Think Tim Montgomery in Paris.

Re: Derrick Florence / SATCH query
>what was his next best legal time in hs or college, seems like real flash in the pan. Did he place well or win any big meets?
Yes, like I said: he ran 10.17 to win the World Junior Champs in Athens a month after the 10.13. He also placed second in the 200m. He also won the HS section of Texas Relays that year (1986) in 10.29. He ran a 10.19w prelim before the 10.13 and a 10.27 semi in the WJC.
Don't know what he did in 1987. In 1988 he ran 10.22 in the 1988 NCAA prelims and 10.24 in the OT prelims, plus 10.15w in SWC (I don't have more detailed results to hand).
Fair to say he never quite fulfilled what might be expected of him. He's the only men's 100m world junior champ never to improve on the best they ran as a junior. Still, that 10.13 was completely legitimate and part of a stellar season. Better to have one of those than none at all.
