I'll go with Derek Ibbotson for the first era. 3.57.2 WR in 1957.

No cheating eh? So you knew the answer to all six questions / time frames without having to look them up?

Yeah, I would have been wrong with Ibbotson anyway, I forgot his "Bannister time"

            Jim Grelle?

oh - you are the "teacher can't cheat" because he has an unfair advantage on this very important test that has its place in the pantheon of TFN message Board. This isn't prerequisite to taking the MCAT or LSAT ... just a simple exercise in trivia. granted an obscure one. I'm guessin most people can get one or two. For those doing the cross exam I 'got' 3/5 name and 3/5 times. Time for redirection Mr Perry Mason. I would say lighten up is the course of the day - its only a game, albeit one with dire consequences - which people make up on their own.

                  4. Morceli ran about 3:50 in 1995, Atlanta pre-Olympic meet.
                  whoops, you want Americans.

Re: fastest first sub 4:00 mile

I think Steve Holman went very fast in his first sub-4. He had run equivalent 1500s as fast, but never a mile for some reason.

Per Anderson. If the question was the "reverse." the slowest first sub-4, you'd be correct with Grelle, whose first was a 3:59.9 at Mt.SAC in April, 1962.

Re: fastest first sub 4:00 mile

For slowest, Darren Brown's 3:59.99 will be tough to beat.

Edit: Actually, looking at the US list of sub-4 milers, a bunch of guys have a first sub-4 that is 3:59.99.

Re: fastest first sub 4:00 mile

How about 3:59.998 for a first sub-4 Mile? Apparently was good enough for Cornell's Sport Information Department!

                          Feb. 10, 2013:

"Wade Breaks Four-Minute Mile to Set New School Record"
                          http://www.cornellbigred.com/news/2013/ ... 34902.aspx

(However, they list it as 4:00.00 on their school record page.)

If my calculations are correct, he'd need to have been about 6cm farther up the track to get the 3:59.990 needed for an official sub-4.

                            Dang!
                            USA only?
Too bad, because Peter Snell's 3:54.4 in 1962 was his first, AND a WR!!!
(How many first sub-4's were WR's???)

                            Okay, so USA only.
Do you separate indoor from outdoor?
Because while Alan Webb broke 4 INdoors early in 2001 (Still the indoor record!!), I think his outdoor HSR at Pre was his first sub-4 OUTdoors!!
