Denis Elton Fikes ran a 3:55 to break 4 minutes for the first time. It was at the Penn Relays - I think in 1974.

Good call. That was really impressive at the time.

okay, participation fading. This is what I have, per TFN mile list

            Era/time frame
(yr mark was made) place on all time list name (affiliation) time (place in race)

            * = never ran faster in career

            ’57-69
            (67) 22. Dave Wilborn (Oregon) 3:56.2* (3)

            ’70-79
            (74) 68. Denis Fikes (Penn) 3:55.0* (2)

            ’80-89
            (81) 116. +Sydney Maree (Athletic Attic) 3:48.83 (1)

            ‘90-99
            (92) 186. Steve Holman (Georgetown) 3:53.31 (4)

            ’00-09
            (08) 312. Lopez Lomong (Nike) 3:53.97 (5)

            ’10-present
            (11) 361. Kyle Miller (Nike) 3:55.38* (5)

if you find an error or have a ?" ... it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference as this is just a very obtuse trivia exercise. Scores will count for 20% of final grade - and that is negotiable.

Did Fikes ever go sub-4 again?

One week later he ran 3:58.3 in the Penn-Cornell dual meet.

I don't think this should count, as he had run sub-4 previous to becoming US eligible (or maybe US citizen). That is what the "+" is in front of his name.

I agree, should have caught that one
                      which is now replaced by

                      80-89
                      (137) Brian Theriot (adidas) 3:56.10* (8)
