  • Funny flubs in Matti Koskimies' Absolute Age Records

I became aware today of this interesting site for absolute age records:

But these entries are hilariously wrong:

    In the 200:
    47y 0m 17169 20.27 Wallace Spearmon USA 2009-09-06 1962-09-03

    In the mile:
    58y 0m 21186 3:58.62 Ralph Boston USA 1997-05-11 1939-05-09 PB (Alltime-771)

    In the high jump:
    63y 11m 23343 2.31 Michael Mason CAN 2012-05-01 1948-06-02 PB (Alltime-144)

    In the heptathlon:
    84y 2m 30726 6199 Christel Schulz GER 2005-05-22 1921-04-06 PB (Alltime-196)

The site author is Matti Koskimies of Finland. But which one?

The site says it draws its stats from http://www.alltime-athletics.com/

    What's going on here?

Try contacting him through his home page:

    http://www.apulanta.fi/matti/

Apart from that I found this page I don't know anything about him. All I know is that Apulanta is a popular rock group in Finland, but I don't know what Matti has to do with it.

Is apulanta a colleague or competitor with [email protected] for compiling age records?

Well, according to alltime-athletics.com, Wallace Spearmon, Sr. ran 20.27 in Rhede in 1987 and Wallace Spearmon, Jr. has run 20.27 four times ('06, '08, '09, '12).

Matti's site has no smarts for errors like this, it just pulls data from alltime-athletics. If there is an error in the alltime-athletics database this will be reflected on Matti's site. Peter Larsson will need to fix his database and Matti's site should update overnight or however frequently it updates. I have sent Peter a link to this thread.

Wallace Spearmon Jr won the race in that time on that date but the database entry has Wallace Sr DOB of 1962:
          1238 20.27 -0.9 Wallace Spearmon USA 03.09.62 1 Rieti 06.09.2009
Correct DOB for Spearmon Jr is 24.12.84

Actual result for that time and date is:
3:58.62 Richie Boulet USA 14.06.73 6 Portland (adidas Oregon) 11.05.1997

There is an error in the DOB in this entry:
          949 2.31 Michael Mason CAN 02.06.48 1 Baie Mahault 01.05.2012

This is the DOB for the Michael Mason from Canada who had a LJ best of 7.96 on 17.08.1971. The HJ Mason's correct DOB is 30.09.86, which is used in other database records for Mason.

This appears to be the DOB of the Christel Schulz of Germany who jumped a world record LJ in Berlin on 30.07.39. The DOB for the heptathlete is 30.01.84 according to ATFS 2006
