  • Dow-Jones Hits 995

Happy birthday today (Sunday) to an Olympic champion who turns 48 years old this day. Our birthday athlete was 26 when winning this gold medal.

The day this champion athlete was born, the Dow-Jones Index hit a record 995 points. This happened on a Wednesday, the same year Dan O'Brien was born.

Our birthday athlete's father died at the age of 49. Injuries plagued this champion's career in track and field.

If you traveled from our athlete's birthplace to the city where this person won the Olympic gold medal, you would travel about 760 miles. Don't concern yourself with the hurdles when trying to think of this person's name.

This champion athlete comes from a country which has already won gold in Sochi. This athlete is an ambassador for "Right To Play", an organization which helps children around the world.

You can skip the pole vault, discus, steeplechase, marathon, sprints, and the triple jump when eliminating events. Our birthday athlete was not the favorite going into the Olympic competition.

Somebody knows this Olympic gold medalist. Go ahead and name our birthday athlete for today.

That was a tough one, had to look at some stat "books" to come out with the right answer.
Hints: (1) 760 miles is a long distance by European standards. (2) Perhaps the Oly champ turned 49 today.

LopenUupunut, you got her. Happy birthday today to Ellen van Langen. Ellen won the women's 800 in Barcelona (1992) in 1:55.54. Ana Quirot was third in 1:56.80. I believe Quirot was the favorite going into these Games. Liliya Nurutdinova ran 1:55.99 for the silver medal.

Tough to say if she was the favorite, but she had the WL going into the Games.

Another 1992 olympic champ was born exactly the same day with Van Langen but a year earlier (Dieter Baumann)
