If I recall correctly, Oerter's first throw was generally his best. Whether the quote is his, I have no idea.

Not particularly historical, but from John Schumacher's article in today's Sacramento Bee quoting Christian Cantwell: "I'm a first-throw guy."

And, indeed, Cantwell had just put the shot 73' 11 1/2" at the Oregon Classic yesterday on his first effort.
