  • Budd & Drayton

In the Frank Budd thread there is talk of back in the day when Budd and Paul Drayton were both on that 1962 Villanova team. That got me thinking of other schools with a couple speed demons on the team together.

    How's bout..

Bill Woodhouse and Bobby Morrow ACU
Eddie Hart and Isacc Curtis Cal
San Jose State had all kinds of speedy duos and 4x1 teams between the late 50's up to around 71 or so.
Don Quarrie and Willie Deckard USC
Calvin Smith and Emmitt King Alabama
Hal Busby and Tom Jones UCLA
Tyson Gay and Wallace Spearmon Arkansas
Richard Stebbins and Vernus Ragsdale Grambling
Richard Thompson and Trindon Holliday LSU
Bernie Rivers and Rene Matison New Mexico
Leonard Scott and Justin Gatlin Tennessee
Cliff Branch and George Daneils Colorado
Jimmy Hines and Clyde Duncan Texas Southern
Kim Collins and Darvis Patton TCU
Willie McGee and Jerry Sims Alcorn
Brian Lewis and Tim Montgomery Norfolk St
Art Bragg and George Rhoden (200) Morgan State
Herb Washington and Marshall Dill Michigan State
Mike Goodrich and Larry Highbaugh Indiana

    Who did I forget?

    64 Olympics

Due to injuries to 100m sprinters Mel Pender and Trenton Jackson, Paul Drayton and Gramblings Richard Stebbins had to step in and help out on the 4x1 relay.

    Fantastic job, Dixon.

In another realm, surely no school can match Rafer Johnson and C.K. Yang in Decathlon. I competed in Palmyra (9th, my highest place) when hometown/Manhattan Hurdler Charlie Pratt won, w/ C.K. making his first appearance on U.S. soil, acc. by his Taiwanese Coach and ol' Ducky Drake of UCLA.

That was back when most Decathlon Champs were Runner/Hurdlers (Rafer, Milt Campbell, Joel Shankle, even Bob Mathias as Hurdler) w/ only Bob Richards and C.K. being outstanding vaulters.
That was when they had to revise the Tables, thanks to C.K.

      Thanks

Rafer grew uo about 40 miles north of me in Kingsburg, him and his brother Jim used to baby sit one of my sister in laws. I know, I also went..huh?...when told that by that sister in law. Jim (a stud hurdler) is in the pro football Hall of Fame. I'm pretty sure (knowing Kingsburg) that the Johnson familty was the only Afro American family in town.

Yep, no school compares to UCLA when it comes to a great pair of decathletes there togrether. if I remember this right, Yang won more events but Johnson scored higher.

Assuming you're talking 1960 Rome decathlon, Yang won 7 events to Rafer's 3. Rafer won the 3 throws but his margins were high enough to get him the gold medal.

You're also talking about the difference between a flagship state university and a small catholic college in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Does anyone know when Yang switched to fiberglass and what his best non-glass height was?
The N.Y. Times obituary on Frank Budd included a photo from the 1961 AAU 100. The caption mentions that he beat Paul Drayton. However, the photo does not show Drayton but prominently shows Budd and third place finisher Dave James. In the background you can see Ira Murchison and Ed Colleymore. I'd forgotton until I just looked it up, that Colleymore also went to Villanova.

And if I recall correctly, re '61 AAU meet, Drayton then won the 220.

Yes you do recall correctly about the 220. I was there the second day. It was the first Track Meet that I attended.

My first "big" outdoor meet... I was 18, living/growing up out in the burbs. Was there both days. A real thrill for me, I can remember so many events that day like they were yesterday, particularly the 100, 440, mile, 3 m, 6 m, HJ, and PV. Make that Budd, O Davis, Burleson, Tabori, Gutenecht, Avant, and Morris.

I wish I was old enough to have the insane expectations for Villanova track that people 40 years older than me have.
