Happy birthday today (Wednesday) to an Olympic champion in a field event. This champion also competed in a running event, however did not run in the Olympic final.

Our birthday champion was born in the "Constitution State" 139 years ago this day (U.S. Grant was the president). Born on a Friday, this athlete won Olympic gold on a Friday.

Only 20 years old when winning the Olympic gold medal, our birthday athlete pretended to be sick in order to get out of school to compete in the Olympic Games. A graduate of the oldest school in continuous operation in North America, this champion became a doctor and served in France during the first World War.

Don't think about any of the weight events when trying to come up with the name of this athlete. You can skip the triple jump and high jump when thinking about this person's event.

Seven years after our birthday athlete graduated from college, Franklin Delano Roosevelt graduated from the same university. Dwight David Eisenhower was our president when this birthday athlete died at the age of 79.

Do you know this Olympic champion's name? Not many do.

Very good, 79; it is Bill Hoyt, winner of the first Olympic pole vault (1896). Hoyt also ran the hurdles (110), but decided not to run the final.
