Hey Paula

Happy 72nd birthday today (Tuesday) to an Olympic champion in a field event. This champion competed in three Olympic Games and won the gold medal in the first of those three Games.

Do you remember Ray Hildebrand and Jill Jackson? They came out in 1963 with a popular song called "Hey Paula". Jill Jackson and our birthday athlete were born on the same day, month, and year.

Only 22 when winning this Olympic gold medal, our birthday person carried the national flag in the Opening Ceremonies at the age of 26.

Today this person is still very involved in the sport of track and field.

Yup, looks like Davies. Don't know if Nevala competed in three Olys, but would imagine he was not the flag carrier at opening ceremonies in Mexico City.

Pego got him. Happy birthday today to Lynn Davies, winner of the 1964 men's long jump. Today Lynn is president of British Athletics.

Nevala only competed in 1964 (gold medal) and 1968 (14th in QR)
