  • Mercer U. track exhibit in their HOF

If you hold cursor over picture, a magnifying glass will appear and you can blow up pic.

Was at Mercer U. in Macon, Ga., a few weeks ago. What a beautiful place. My wife graduated there. I wish we at Tennessee could do stuff half as nice as they do. What a beautiful campus and very nice athletics facilities.

They have a beautiful athletics facility and in it is their hall of fame. Each sport has a little display -- all the same size. Above is theirs for track. Thought some would enjoy. We have nothing like this. And if we did have something, it would look like crap.

Back In The Day, circa 1982, I used to go to Macon from up here in Indiana to work with a client ( Charter Medical ) and I passed by the campus entrance several times. Alas, I never had time to really see it.

Steve, we last visited there about ten years ago. The campus is 100 times nicer now. Mercer has always been a good school, but the campus is just much improved. They have football now, which I think is a total waste of money. But I guess schools think it is worth the investment because of the excitement it generates.

We spoke with someone in the athletic department. She told us their goal is to be the equal of Baylor U. (Both are Southern Baptist schools, I think.) I think they should back off that goal, because they are as good as Baylor already, but in different ways.

The high jumper in the exhibit is named David Rowe, "the greatest track athlete in Mercer history." Completed in other events, too. Guessing he was not a figure on the national scene.

See most of the exhibit featured Jimmy Carnes (1980 Olympic warmups?). Mercer does not have a track, or sponsor men's track as a sport. Just added women's track couple of years ago, for gender equity, when they added football.
