As I'm sure many of you know, Craig Sager, the colorful and beloved NBA sideline reporrter for TNT, passed away on Thursday after waging a courageous and inspirational 2-year battle against leukemia. In part because of the outrageous outfits he wore on air (in addition to the fact that he was very good at what he did), Sager was a popular figure in the NBA long before he was first diagnosed with Leukemia in 2014, but his image took on iconic proportions as he continued to work, even while undergoing chemo treatments! His upbeat speech at this year's ESPYs is one that will be played for years to come(see link below).
As the news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from all over the sports world (and elsewhwre). Many gave the details of his career, touching on the various sports he covered before he became a mainstay of TNT's NBA broadcast team. But I haven't seen one yet that mentioned his connection to track & field.
I'm happy and proud to say that I worked side-by-side with Craig from 1989-1994 when he was the play-by-play announcer for Turner when it was the prime broadcaster for U.S. meets. I don't recall any wild outfits during that period, but he certainly was the fun-loving guy that people would get to know during his time covering the NBA We shared a lot of fun times together, from Atlanta to Knoxville and Russia to Australia (when he was covering other sports for Turner and NBC). He'll be missed.
Sager leaves behind his beloved wife Stacy and five kids, all of whom shared in his battle these last two years..
A memorial celebration will be held in Marietta, Georgia, on Tuesday

"I will continue to keep fighting, sucking the marrow out of life as life sucks the marrow out of me," Sager told the audience. "I will live my life full of love and full of fun. It's the only way I know how."
