Another doctor (surgeon specialising in gynaecology) was the Australian Richard Honner. He set an Australian LJ record (7.24m) which stood for many years before competing in the 1924 Paris Olympics (where he did not do well).

He then continued medical studies in the UK, twice winning the AAA LJ Championships (7.43 & 7.45), beating the UK record on both occasions .

El Toro-- I'd have known Hollingsworth as a 400 hurdler but only because he was my Birthday Record holder (https://forum.trackandfieldnews.com/...rthday-records) until I found James King! But an internationalist would not have been too likely to know Spies; her link was the middle distance runner and was known by midwestfan as a Villanova alum.

It's good you posted the question because it prodded Vault-emort to recall Honner. He always needs a flogging to get some action!

On this Memorial weekend, Lets have some kindness to an "OLD VETERAN" medical officer. My track knowledge can't match the historical track and field knowledge of the group here. When I see a question with some connection and limited historical knowledge, I try to beat the masters.

I will give dj a chance to shine on this limited relationship question that may stump all the others?

What connection does Charlie Jenkins, Marcus O'Sullivan, and Ted Meredith have in common? It is not that they are all Olympians.
Only dj should know, I hope?

If you want a woman marathon runner, Sally Ann Hales ran 2:28:38 in London in 1985. The hectic schedule of a junior doctor meant that her performances then regressed. She appears to now be a pathologist in Cheshire (NW England).

That is true but not what I was addressing. All of them achieved this common link after their running careers had ended.

They had children who attended Villanova?

J Rorick you are wrong on first guess although 2/3 did have children at VU. The second guess is true but not the very unique link that makes the three coaches have one similar common career.
Last clue should nail it for someone. They all were employed by the same institution.

It is late on the East Coast and I will give answer in a bit of trivia I just ran across last week on researching some of the old Villanova track teams. On May 6, 1928 the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Villanova defeating Drexel in a dual track meet. Jimmy Woods was Villanova's 440 yd man winning at 52.2 on a horrible track. The article surprised me by stating:" Coach James E. Meredith was greatly pleased with the showing of Captain Jimmy Woods of the Main Line aggregation"
I never knew that Meredith was a Villanova track coach before Jumbo Elliott, Jenkins, and Marcus. The team only had two meets in summer of 1928 (Haverford beat Nova soundly). In the next school term (1928-29) Meredith signed to coach Penn in November, 1928 and the rest is history for Penn. At Penn Relays in 1928 Meredith had Villanova's one mile relay place second in Class B Mile Relays.
If anyone knows further details on how, why, or how long Meredith coached at Villanova let me know. I could not find any mention of him at Villanova in 1927.

That would have been my 3rd guess 😀 And all 3 were guesses.
