  • A 1948 Big 10 question

First of all, the Big 10 in 1948 was just the Big 9.

At the Big 9 championships in Madison that year the 880y was won by 1947 NCAA champion Bill Clifford of Ohio State in 1:52.8. Newspapers recorded that Clifford won in a 3-way battle with Don Washington (Ohio State) and Elmer Prifogle (Indiana). Behind them were Herb Barten, NCAA 3rd placer in 1947, who had won the Mile earlier in the afternoon, and in 5th place - Mal Whitfield (!), winner of the 440y that afternoon.

Clifford had a faster time than 1:52.8y [he ran 1:52.6 in Evanston in June], while Washington wasn't listed in the world's top-50 [1:53.8y or better], and Prifogle's best is listed at 1:54.8y for that season.

Both DJ and I have dug through papers reporting the meet for the next week or two in an effort to dig up times for Washington and Prifogle without success

The question have is - I there anyone out there who has seen a photo of the race, or was at the meet and can remember that race ? The fact thatth papers called it a 3-way battle suggests that 2nd and 3rd were close to the winner, but how close?
