    Derek Ibbotson died 23 Feb 2017 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England.

    Bronze medal at 5K at Melbourne 1956

    Best known for world mile record of 3:57.2 set in London in July 1957. Only 3rd mile WR under 4 minutes - after Bannister and Landy.

      First to run exactly 4:00.0. For whatever reason he never again came close to his shape he was in in 1957.

        <<Having contested 48 races that year – 37 of which he won – Ibbotson took a couple of months off training ahead of the 1958 season to recover from his hectic 1957 campaign and subsequently struggled to regain his best form. He continued racing competitively until the mid-1960s.>>
