  • Regina Jacobs gets credit for six masters age-group records

USATF Masters age-group records now reflect six W35 marks by Regina Jacobs between 1999 and 2003, soon after which she retired amid a doping ban.

    I write about it here:
    http://masterstrack.com/usatf-master...ons-expedited/

    My questions:

Are Regina's marks from that period suspect? Did she ever test positive for these marks:

Should she be listed as a masters record-holder?

I'm preparing a story for Times of San Diego. I may quote your comments. Or feel free to write me at [email protected]. Thankee!

I thought you were okay with masters runners doping. This seems like a bit of a double standard.

Her ban didn't start until 7/17/04

But what triggered the ban? Last I read, it was a retesting of the 2003 USATF Outdoor samples, where she came up THG. So, from that meet onward, her marks are officially invalidated.

My issue is with the one-size-fits-all anti-doping system, not with sanctions against elite athletes who test positive and are penalized by IAAF. At the time of her sanction, Regina was considered a professional. Masters age-groupers rarely make money.

Here's the 2004 USADA release on Regina:

all marks from USATF on in '03 were invalidated, yes.

And T&FN invoked its protocol which negated all her marks from calendar '03, so she had no world/U.S. ranking posiitons that year.

T&FN tossed Jacobs from 2003 rankings (she won USATF 1500m). But not for any years prior to 2003.

Here's my story for MyNewsLA.com (since Regina was born in L.A.):

Still hoping to hear back from Regina and others, including ladies like Ruth Wysocki and Alisa Harvey, whose marks were displaced in the masters record books.

No sub 4 indoors in '03 for Jacobs.

Alisa Harvey, now 52, got back to me, and says she heard rumors before 2003 of Regina doping:

You needed to go to Alisa Harvey to come up with rumors about this particular runner? IIRC, the boards which existed at the time...save this one once it was fired up...were filled with accusations regarding Jacobs.

Let me also give a big shout-out to Jeff Brower for modernizing the ratifications procedure. That's something I've been bitching about for the regular USATF records for years/decades. Having to wait until the annual meeting to do anything is such an anachronism in an era where e-communications make for "instant" decision-making.
