Sad (and telling) that news about Cooper now belongs on this thread, instead of in Current Events where we all had such high hopes for what he would do at the elite level.

Previously mentioned on the Nassar thread, Phil Banning held the UK indoor 1500 record in the 70s. Now serving 7 and a half years in one of Her Majesty's boarding houses:

He had more 'success' as a crim. Sentenced to 10 years jail in Australia, he disappeared to India where he also faced drug charges, before escaping authorities yet again. Two years afterwards Sri Lankan customs found 41 packs of drugs including heroin in his possession and in 1987 he received the death sentence.

A successful appeal commuted this sentence to 5 years of jail in his home-town of Adelaide.

His daughter followed in the same footsteps as Dad. No, she wasn't a good javelin thrower. She was sentenced to 6 years jail in 2012 for manufacturing and selling meth.
At least he would go to any length to be there on her birthday...:

The only other Aussie who springs to mind is double Olympic finalist & Commonwealth Games 400m champion Darren Clark (PBs 10.47, 20,49, 44,38).

He was given a six-month suspended sentence for driving offences in 2004. During that period, he was again caught driving (twice) with a suspended licence, speeding on one of those occasions. The judge iin his second court appearance took pity on him, due to Clark's history of depression, and put him on a two-year good behaviour bond.

He has avoided trouble since then.

Also 2 years for fraud in 2000 for 64 year old Jeff Julian, NZ marathon runner.

    Edit
Damn. Onset of senility. Working through the posts, I just discovered I made the same post May 2018.
