  • RIP Tom Von Ruden

Tom Von Ruden in addition to being a great middle distance runner he was an excellent mentor and coach. He will be missed by many who learned so much, good guy.

The name of the university both lonewolf and Von Ruden attended changed from Oklahoma A&M to Oklahoma State in 1957.

Which Tom Von Ruden is this? I googled the obit and it was a 48 year old who didn't attend Oklahoma State...like the Von Ruden we track fans know about. Could he be the son?

My prayers for Tom Von Ruden and his family and friends. A great 880-mile runner from Oklahoma State in the 60's. Their 2 mile relay team of Metcalf, J. Perry, Von Ruden, D.Perry broke world record at Fresno Relays with von Ruden running 1:49.2 third leg. I believe he was in service after graduation and advanced into world class miler with a bunch of other Olympians who were in service teams in 1964-1968 era. Not sure what he did after running career ended? He would be about 74-75 years of age.

Tom was the oldest U.S. 1,500 meter runner at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics at 24 years.

For some reason it sticks in my mind that he was also a 46ft+ triple jumper.

It lists his birthplace as Couer d'Alene ID but my brother remembers him competing for Notus ID HS. He knows because he taught at nearby Homedale ID in early 1960s.

This Sports Illustrated profile has the answers.

It refers to his triple jumping (cites a PR of 46-2, and that he scored in the Big-8 Championships) and also mentions that he spent the last two years of high school in Notus ID.
