Happy birthday today (Thursday) to an Olympic champion who was born on a Thursday 73 years ago today.

This champion competed in two events at the Olympic Games, but competed in only one Olympics.

The gold medal this individual won came with a new world record.

Our birthday athlete won the Olympic gold medal in Asia and was not born in Europe, Australia, or South America.

You might know that this athlete did not compete in the hurdles at the Olympics.

Can you name our birthday athlete for this "Flag Day" in June? Please give it a try.

Ulis Williams is an excellent guess, dukehjsteve, however Ulis was born about four years before our birthday athlete. I said it was an excellent guess because both Williams and our birthday champion won gold medals at the same Olympics. They won the gold medals on the same day, but in different events. After their athletic years, both athletes (Ulis Williams and our birthday person) entered the same professional careers. At the Olympics, both athletes had world records with their gold medals and something else in common which I will explain later.

So, with the clues provided, this is likely to be a member of the 4 x 100 m relay team. Hayes and Drayton are out, I seem to recall Ashworth came up a few months back, and so I am left with Stebbins - as I recall he ran in the 200m event also.

Happy birthday today to Richard Stebbins and very good catson52. Stebbins turns 73 today. He ran the third leg on the winning four by 100 relay team in Tokyo (1964). Ulis Williams also ran the third leg on the winning four by 400 relay team in Tokyo (1964). Dick Stebbins did finish in seventh place in the Tokyo 200 final. The U.S. men were 1-2-7 in that 1964 200. You did well catson52.
