  • USATF Hall of Fame Nominations

I don’t know why the National Track and Field Hall of Fame does not issue a Press Release after nominees are determined each year. Yes, we are a niche sport that the public does not care about, but like the voting for the Baseball Hall or the Rock & Roll Hall, seeing the list of nominees will cause fans and former fans to pause and think (and maybe create a discussion) about the great athletes and contributors to our sport.

Here are this year’s finalists (alphabetical order). I don’t know how many votes are required to be elected. Hypothetically, if only one in each category could be added to the Hall, who would you choose?

    Modern Athletes
    Derrick Adkins
    Shawn Crawford
    Mark Crear
    Sandra Farmer-Patrick
    Steve Lewis
    Michael Marsh
    Inger Miller
    Dwight Phillips

    Veteran Athletes
    Dan Ahearn
    Malcolm Ford
    Frank Foss
    Kathy Hammond
    Fred Kelly
    James Lightbody
    Maxey Long
    John Powell

    Contributor
    Al Franken
    Bob Hersh
    Pat Rico
    Browning Ross
    Berny Wagner

weren't she and Slaney cleared under the same rationale at the same time?

Michael Marsh, one of the best the sport has ever witnessed !

Now about Al Franken, sure he could tell a great joke but dont you need more than that to get in a hall of fame

Frank Foss, the RL of the 1920 OG!

Jokes aside, the average user (especially California-based user) of this board (and especially of this Historical Forum) likely, upon reflection, has to give track’s Al Franken a lot of credit for selling our sport to corporate sponsors and keeping track & field in the media for over 40 years.

Without help from a university or AAU/TAC/USATF (the first of which suspended him twice), Franken put on meets that brought the world’s top stars to a U.S. audience. His meets hooked a lot of young fans (including me) into a lifelong love of the sport.

Here is a profile that will bring back some memories:

Yeah, and Lightbody got screwed - guy won 4 gold medals and 6 Olympic medals - not sure what he has to do to get in

Obviously the committee are against you Bambam and decided not to give you the satisfaction of 3 out of 3.

That's OK. I am very upset about one of the nominees for the World Golf Hall of Fame - they were just announced today. Two tremendous choices in Peggy Kirk Bell and Dennis Walters. Two good choices in Retief Goosen and Jan Stephenson. And one other choice.

Egads. That IS a horrible choice. Inexplicable.
