  • Remember The Maine

Happy birthday today (Friday) to an Olympic champion who was born the same day the U.S.S. Maine blew up in Havana Harbor.

That was 121 years ago this day in February.

Our birthday athlete was not the favorite going into the Olympic final.

Don't worry about the hurdles for this gold medal.

This champion competed in only one Olympic Games and died at the age of 84.

You probably already know that our birthday athlete did not qualify for the Olympics, however was named to the Olympic team because another athlete was dropped from the team.

An Olympic champion in the 400 and another in the 100 share the same initials as our birthday champion.

All three athletes (our birthday person, the 400 Olympic champ, and the 100 athlete) speak the same language and come from two different nations.

Please name our birthday athlete for this penultimate Friday of February.

Nice job, LopenUupunut. You got him. Allen Woodring was born 121 years ago and won the 200 in Antwerp (1920). Next year, during the Tokyo Olympics, will mark 100 years since Woodring won that 200 gold medal.
