Happy 79th birthday today (Sunday) to an Olympic champion who competed in one Olympic Games and remains the only athlete from a certain country to win Olympic gold in a certain event.

This particular event and the country have a strong history together.

Our birthday athlete was not born in South America, Asia, Africa, or Australia.

Approximately 111 years ago, an athlete, sharing the same initials as our birthday person, won Olympic gold in an event that is similar to our birthday individual's event.

This athlete may not be an easy one to name, but I think you will get our birthday athlete's name on this third Sunday during the President's Day weekend.

    Good luck.

Happy birthday yesterday (Sunday) to Willi Holdorf (79). Willi won the decathlon in Tokyo in 1964. He is the only person from West Germany to win the Olympic decathlon. Paul Herman was the top American in Tokyo at fourth place. Good work, thedoorknobbroke.

It is quite surprising really that Holdorf is the only Olympic champ in the Zehnkampf from FRG. The re-unified Germany (since '91) is technically the same country but has yet to produce another gold medallist. Their brightest hope was probably Frank Busemann who was blighted by injury.
