  • Big Event

This month's "Big Event" happened on this day 56 years ago in North America. This world mark was produced by an athlete who would go on to win two Olympic gold medals approximately 19 months after this world record performance. No hurdles were involved in this Big Event.

Can you name the event and the athlete? Extra credit if you know the actual mark.

If it is a guy, it has to be either a 100 or 400 guy, and Larrabee set no wr in March. That leaves Bob Hayes. Perhaps a 9.1 in the 100 y ?

It's not Bob Hayes, however it is an event that Hayes use to run (not in the Olympics). The weather at this track (I was there two weeks ago) is almost perfect for this event.

Very good, bambam1729, it is Henry Carr who broke the world record 56 years ago today in Arizona. You still need the event and the site (where in Arizona? It's a big state). Remember, extra credit for the mark.

Henry Carr went to Arizona State, not Arizona. I believe the event took place on ASU's home track in Tempe.

Henry Carr did break the world record 56 years ago in Tempe, Arizona. Nice job, tandfman, however you haven't named the event nor the mark (to the tenth of a second).

The event would have been the 220y and I think he also picked up the 200m record as well. I'd have to look up the mark.

My subscription to T&Fn started in April '63 with this as one of the cover stories - but don't ask me to recall the time.
