  • Should Bruce Jenner Have Benn DQed?

Just got done watching a video of his 1975 Pan-American Games victory and noticed that he clearly, and more than once, steps on the inside line during the 400m. Anyone ever notice this before.

Also, I noticed that some have his score as 8045 and others as 8024. Whats up with this - scoring table changes?

See 5:32 and onward of video!

Jenner's decathlon in the 1975 PanAm games in Mexico City was scored at the time using the 1962 tables for a total of 8045 points.

Subsequent to the introduction of the 1985 tables, earlier decathlons were rescored to enable correct comparison on all-time lists and setting record benchmarks.

The 1985 tables provided a new total of 8,024 points for his performances:

    100m 11.09
    LJ 7.09
    SP 15.23
    HJ 1.97
    400m 49.12
    110H 14.95
    DT 47.93
    PV 4.60
    JT 63.99
    1500m 4:42.86

      Jenner's 8,045 (1962 tables) points set the PanAm Record, beating Bill Toomey's 1967 score of 8,044 (1962).

At the next PanAm Games, Bob Coffman eclipsed Jenner's record with 8,078 (1962).

However, after the introduction of the new tables, Jenner regained the record with his rescored 8,024 (1985) over Coffman's rescored 8,019 (1985).

This stayed the record until 1995 when Kip Janvrin scored 8,049 (1985).

The IAAF rules at the time did not require a DQ for stepping on the inside lane line. That rule was changed in the 1980s.

That rule is not the only thing that has change. And besides, at this point in time, what difference does it make? Just saying....

I'm beginning my review of the 1972 Athletics competition shortly and will be watching out for and lane violations or fouls in the jumps and throws so they can duly be reported. I might even find a wayward foot around a hurdle if I look hard enough but I am on it!
